You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
When I met you
Don't You Want Me was written by Philip Oakey, who was inspired by a real life article he had read in a teen magazine. Originally Oakey intended for the vocals to be solely male, however he changed his mind at the influence of the film A Star is Born, and recruited backing singer Susan Ann Sulley as his duet partner.
Initially Oakey hated the track and dubbed it the worst of its album Dare. It was also relegated to the last track of the b-side of the vinyl edition of the album. However, the band’s record label Virgin insisted on the release of the song as the fourth and final single of Dare, and Oakey compromised by having the vinyl include a colour pull out poster.
